Current Relevance: Important Creativity Factor
These few conversations Kyle had with his colleague were about developing
video game software. Kyle and his
colleague used an important concept in creativity. I’ll come
back to this. First, what was the result? In just a short time Kyle found
himself presenting his new game in the huge video game conference in front of
reporters from around the world.
I’m sure you’re asking yourself, “how does a 28-year old who has never been in
business find himself at the top of his game in such a short time?” In a
word:”Brainstorming!” However, Kyle brainstormed differently from most people
and that's why he became so successful so fast.
Whether he knew it or not, he utilized an important technique that is part of
the Brainstorming process I call “Current Relevance.”
Rather than trying to dream up a whole new way to enjoy games, he drew on the
current technologies and more importantly, he remained centered in the current
business platform for the video game industry and business.
Let me explain the central point and value of “Current Relevance” by way of a
historical inventor. What he invented is very common today and is known as the
facsimile machine, otherwise referred to as the “FAX” machine. There isn’t
anyone in the modern world that isn’t familiar with this business tool, its
value and how much money has been made from this creative innovation. However,
there’s very few who know of the original inventor of the fax machine. Few are
aware this inventor never made one single penny from this valuable tool and the
reason why he made nothing is due to not understanding “Current Relevance.”
Who was the original inventor of the fax machine? Back in 1843 a Scottish
clockmaker named Alexander Bain developed and patented the first fax. It was a
crude scanning device by today’s standards. An electrically wired stylus
attached to the tip of a swinging pendulum swept back and forth over a block of
metal type, sending electric pulses over telegraph wires. Another wired pendulum
translated each pulse into a dark spot on electro sensitive paper.
Alexander Bain lived over 150 years ago. His invention was a revelation and
became extremely popular but not in his time period. There doesn’t exist today a
single large company that does not have dozens of these units. Countless
fortunes have been made and yet not one dime was realized by Alexander Bain or
his family. The reason is simple. Although fax machines are popular in our time,
the whole concept and support system did not exist in his time. It was not
“Relevant” for his time period like ours. The value could not be understood nor
realized at that time 150 years ago. Whereas our day it’s not only understood it
is a must have tool.
This is where Kyle’s approach demonstrates the value of relevance not only in
product or service and the value deliverable, but additionally, current
relevance in the support systems. Now this is the key point. Kyle didn’t attempt
to completely re-engineer how video game technology is currently being
delivered. Instead, he got right in step with the platforms of today.
Kyle Gabler is another successful brainstorming creativity individual we can all
learn from. His experience highlighted not only the tremendous value
brainstorming brings to any industry, but more importantly, how valuable it
makes us.

Furthermore, Kyle’s experience is evidence of how quickly people who brainstorm
can move up business wise and how quickly they became known by very important
influential people. It is a truth that who you know is important. How Kyle
Gabler has become known and who he knows are directly connected to his
brainstorming skills.
